How I stay up to date as a web developer

Published on

Our industry is always changing so rapidly and it can be hard to keep up. Here’s how I do my best in staying up to date as a web developer.

Podcasts

While I listen to a handful of software related podcasts, Syntax is the best one for keeping up to date on things. Although JavaScript focused, Wes and Scott are constantly delivering shows based on brand new and upcoming features for HTML, CSS and JS as well as insights around developing with AI, tooling, and self-hosting.

RSS

I’ve talked before how RSS is underrated and this is no exception. I use RSS to stay up to date on everything, not just web development.

If a website has a blog or writes articles, check to see if they have an RSS feed. Depending on who you follow, they might link to other blogs and feature guest authors who you can also follow. The scrolls newsletter is excellent for this and I’ve been introduced to so many great web development and web-adjacent articles and blogs because of it.

Before you know it, your feed will be full of articles from interesting people about the web, building cool stuff and development tips and tricks.

Social media

The same applies to social media as RSS - follow accounts and users that interest you and if they retweet or reply to other users, consider giving them a follow too. As a bonus, see if they have a blog too and add then to your RSS reader!

YouTube

Although I don’t watch YouTube much myself for keeping up to date, I think video content is great for deep dives and explanations into new features, industry news, and conference talks.

How do you stay up to date?

Although the industry is always moving so fast, especially with and around AI, I think I do a decent job of staying up to date as a web developer. If you’re interested in what blogs I’m following, check out my blogroll.
